Was this the last year you’re going to be using your air conditioner? It’s been a pretty rough summer, and if your air conditioner isn’t going to make it, now might be a good time to think about an air conditioner replacement or upgrade. It’s especially good to look into if your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, in which case its efficiency level could be far lower than today’s minimum standards. But there are a number of other features that you should look at when upgrading your air conditioner!
Variable-speed air handlers – in most older air conditioners, the blower is limited to two speeds: on and off. A variable-speed blower can adjust its speed depending on changes in the system, such as clogged up filters, in order to better maintain the environment and comfort level inside your home.
Fan delay – every time your compressor and fan cycle off, the conditioned air in your ducts stops where it is instead of moving into your home where it’s needed. A fan with a delay will continue to blow for a few minutes after the compressor stops to ensure that all the cooled or heated air makes its way into the rooms in your home instead of staying trapped in the ducts.
Quieter operation – many new compressors come with compressor vibration isolation, with composite fan blades and sound-deadening blankets, producing noise levels 10 times lower than older units.
Low-cost circulation – cool days (or at least cool nights and mornings) are a great time to shut off the AC and enjoy fresh air. Many new air conditioners come with a fan-only feature that circulates air from outside through your home without running the compressor. This is especially effective when paired with a high-efficiency variable-speed air handler.
Environmentally friendly refrigerant: The R-22 refrigerant used in older units is being phased out, so prices are skyrocketing. You can stop worrying about future availability by upgrading to a new unit that uses R-410A, the designated alternative.
