When cooling equipment fails in Arizona, it’s no laughing matter. You rely on air conditioning for comfort and safety. If your system fails, don’t make the mistake of purchasing the first replacement you come across. Asking yourself a few simple questions can help you get the most efficient system for your needs.
What is your cooling load?
It’s the amount of energy it takes to cool your home. The lower your cooling load, the less energy your cooling equipment must produce. Your cooling load is affected by many factors, including the efficiency of your ducts and the size and layout of your home. The only way to determine yours is to have the load calculated. This is the only way your contractor can properly size your new system. Using square footage as a measure is ineffective.
Can you reduce your cooling load?
How effective is closing blinds and curtains during the day at reducing solar gain? How effective is opening windows in the evening, to increase natural ventilation and cooling? These tricks can be more effective than many homeowners think. Can you make upgrades in other areas, like switching to high-efficiency LED lights, which emit less heat, or plugging air leaks to reduce your cooling load?
What’s your best cooling equipment option?
Are there areas of your home that don’t need to be kept cool? If so, you may be able to go with room air conditioning, or a ductless mini-split system, which saves energy by only conditioning areas that need it. If you do need central air, what about a heat pump? Heat pumps provide air conditioning in summer and efficient heat in colder weather.
