Many homeowners rely on their ceiling fans during the summer months to keep their homes cooler. You may not realize that ceiling fans also have the ability to keep your home warmer and reduce heating costs during the cooler months as well.
In the summer months, ceiling fans are used to create a breeze that helps to keep you cool. But in the winter months, ceiling fans can be used to evenly distribute heat around your home. They won’t generate heat, but they will circulate unused heat in the rooms in which they’re running.
As your furnace or heat pump generates warm air, heat tends to congregate near your ceiling because warm air naturally rises. And depending on the height of your ceiling, there may be a significant temperature difference between the floor and ceiling. During the winter months, ceiling fans help to circulate the warmer air that rises to the ceiling, pushing that warm air to the edges of the walls, where it’s forced back down to the floor. Then, it will begin the process of rising all over again. As a result, running ceiling fans can boost the efficiency of your heating system, as well as create a more comfortable room with more even temperatures throughout the space.
When operating the fans, make sure that they are not set to the highest speed. This action will only create a strong breeze that will actually cool you, much like the fans do during summer, because of the strong wind-chill effect created by the fan blades. Instead, set the fan to the lowest setting to allow the fan to circulate the air.
How do you know if the fan is running in the right direction? Most ceiling fans have a switch near the base that allows you to change the direction of the blades. When looking at your ceiling fan, it should run in a clockwise motion during the heating season. It is this motion that will push warm air up and outward.
