You can feel the difference between a well-ventilated home and a poorly-ventilated one. The well-ventilated home feels clean and airy, while the air in the poorly-ventilated one feels stale, heavy and musty. But good ventilation isn’t just a matter of comfort, it can also affect your health so please do not underestimate its value. A poorly-ventilated home is prone to the buildup of carbon monoxide, airborne viruses, mold-facilitating moisture, pet dander and many other pollutants. Ventilating fans can help avoid these issues.
These days, as insulation and energy efficiency becomes more effective and more common, houses are sealed up ever more tightly against the outside world. But without proper ventilation, you’re taking the bad along with the good. When you trap the cool air of the air conditioner inside, make sure you’re not trapping anything else.
Simply installing a ventilating fan can dramatically increase the air quality of your home. Ventilating fans target problem areas, such as above the stove or in the bathroom, and move that air to the outside of your home, while drawing in fresh air from outdoors.
Ventilating fans come in different sizes, with different specializations. The values you’ll want to pay attention to are air changes per hour (ACH), which are as low as 8 for general living rooms and as high as 15 for kitchens. Also pay attention to cubic feet per minute (CFM) and use a larger CFM for larger rooms. You have a lot of options here, so tailor your solution to fit your house and needs.
