Have you ever tried to drink through a punctured or blocked straw? It requires significantly more sucking power to drink a normal amount of liquid. This is the same thing that can happen to your ductwork. Any airflow obstructions will cause your HVAC system to use more energy to maintain your desired thermostat settings. Therefore, it’s important to perform regular ductwork inspections to prevent airflow obstructions from costing you excess energy dollars.

Here are some of the most common energy-wasting airflow obstructions.

Leaky ducts. Sealing products, like mastic tape and caulk, will eventually dry out and corrode. When this happens, your ducts start to leak. If enough of the sealant corrodes, whole sections of ductwork can become disconnected. Inspecting your ducts every year or two allows you to keep an eye on things and reseal your ducts when needed.

Dirty filters. When your filters become dirty or clogged, they create an airflow barrier that has noticeable long-term effects. In addition to higher utility bills and compromised indoor air quality, your system will also experience more wear and tear. Always change your filters as per manufacturer’s instructions, or once a month to optimize indoor air quality and efficiency.

Stuck dampers. If your home has an energy-saving zoned system, that’s great. But if the dampers become stuck in the closed or partially closed positions, that’s not so great. It creates an airflow obstruction that will increase energy usage and have a negative effect on whole-house comfort. Even dampers stuck in open positions contribute to energy waste.

Collapsed ducts. Flex ducts are made like an accordion, allowing them to bend flexibly for efficient designs. However, if they become dramatically dented or collapsed, it blocks the flow of air.

Dirty or blocked air intakes. Your HVAC system works by taking in air, conditioning it, and delivering back to your living space. If the air intakes are dirty, clogged or blocked by furniture or drapes, it will starve your system of air.
