Being energy efficient has numerous benefits. There are lots of different ways to become more energy efficient, but some of the most impactful ways are directly related to your heating and air conditioning systems. Try these tips out to save money and the planet:
Central Air Conditioning
- If you are buying a new central heating and air conditioning unit, consider one with a high seasonal energy efficiency ratio or SEER rating. These models are built to maximize energy use.
- Select a unit which is properly sized for your space needs. If your unit is too large for your needs, you may be using more resources, and paying more money, than necessary.
- Inspect the coils on your AC unit. If your unit is older, it may be best to have the indoor and outdoor compressor coils professionally cleaned. Failing to do this makes the unit as a whole less efficient.
- Get a home air conditioning tune up. By getting a qualified professional to make sure your unit is running properly, you can reduce your excess energy consumption.
- Match your thermostat to your plans. Try turning your thermostat up to around 80 when you leave your home and cool it down when you get home. It takes less energy to cool it down when you come back home than to keep it cool all the time.
- Avoid hot chores. If you need to cook or do some other activities which create a lot of heat, consider waiting until the outside temperature cools down. This will put less stress on your system and ultimately save energy and money.
- Turn off heat producing electronics. If you don’t need it, and its producing heat, turn that machine off.
Heating
- Perform annual maintenance on your unit. Most HVAC vendors will offer a complete tune-up and cleaning on your furnace. Be sure to clarify the extent of work being performed when booking your appointment. Some companies will not include cleaning in the cost of a tune up.
- You need to check if your filters need to be cleaned or replaced monthly. Failure to do so greatly reduces your system’s efficiency. Your HVAC technician will do this for you and give you recommendations on how you can maintain clean filters in the future.
- Have your insulation inspected. Insulation in your attic and around your windows and doors can be a great way to conserve energy, you are much less likely to allow hot air to escape. This will keep your house warmer with less energy needed.
- Thermostat changes. When you are away from your home, turn your thermostat all the way to sixty degrees, and turn it back to sixty eight degrees when you return. If you do this consistently, it can save you around 10% on your energy bills.
- Bring in the sunshine. Whenever you can, try to allow as much natural light to come into your home as possible. The more nature heats up the place, the more you can save.
