We all depend on air conditioning systems to keep our homes cool and comfortable. In Arizona, air conditioning is a potent weapon against the heat and humidity that blankets the region every summer. But as much as we enjoy and rely upon air conditioning systems, most of us don’t know a whole lot about how they function. For example, what are the “coils” inside an air conditioning unit? What purpose do they serve and how does that make the AC blow cool air into our homes?
In traditional central air conditioning systems, two primary coils work to facilitate the cooling process.
- Condenser coils. The condenser coils act to increase the pressure on the refrigerant, which enters the coils as a cool gas and is heated up by the pressure. The heat then disperses outside the coils as the refrigerant liquefies and cools.
- Evaporator coils. The evaporator coils act to evaporate the liquefied refrigerant, pulling heat from the nearby air. A fan then blow across the coils, creating cool air which can then be dispersed throughout your home.
As you can imagine, these coils are vital to the effective functioning of your air conditioning unit. They suffer from wear and tear, just like any other piece of equipment. Coils can spring leaks if they rust or corrode, leaking refrigerant into the outside air. In addition, ice and frost can form on the surface of the coils, indicating either a lack of refrigerant or a problem with the air flow moving across the coils. Regardless of the circumstances, an issue with the coils means that you should contact a trained service professional immediately.
In the Valley-Metro area, the air conditioning experts at Cooper Climate Control can help resolve any issues with the coils in your system. We offer a full maintenance program to recharge coolant, clean the coils and otherwise prevent smaller lingering issues from becoming larger ones.
