No one wants their air conditioning to go out during the height of summer; in the middle of a hot summer day, it’s common to have trouble even getting an AC repairman promptly. Fortunately, your air conditioner will almost always exhibit warning signs before going out completely, which you can observe and address at the beginning of air conditioning season if you are prudent. Your AC may not make it through the summer in Arizona if:
- Your bill is higher than usual. If you’re setting your thermostat to the same temperature and program you do normally, but your bill is abnormally high, it’s a sign that your AC is running inefficiently.
- Your house isn’t cooled well. If your house is warm in some rooms and cool in others, it may be a problem with the ductwork. If the house simply feels uncomfortable, the culprit may be blockage in the filter or outdoors, or your thermostat may be placed in the wrong place. If your the AC is blowing warm air, it may be a symptom of a bigger problem.
- The air conditioner is making strange noises. Unusual noises such as ratting, grinding, and squeaking are a bad sign. It could be as mild as a loose screw, or it could be a major part about to go out.
- There is a leak. A water leak may be a simple blockage, while a refrigerant leak requires immediate attention. Either way, these issues need to be addressed before they worsen. Your AC may not make it through the summer in Arizona if this is not taken care of.
- It smells bad. Your AC should never emit strange odors.
Before calling a repairman for any of these issues, first perform routine air conditioning maintenance, as you should at the beginning of any summer. Routine maintenance includes cleaning out the filter, condenser coils, and generally all parts of the air conditioner. Your AC may not make it through the summer in Arizona if it continues to exhibit the same warning signs after you’ve performed routine maintenance. The exception to this rule is if you see a refrigerant leak, it smells bad, or your air conditioner isn’t running at all – in that case, call a repairman right away.
Depending on the cause, many AC problems are a cheap fix; this is especially true if they are found and addressed during routine maintenance. However, some issues require the replacement of major parts or even the whole unit. This isn’t unusual; on average, AC units only last about 12 years, so homeowners shouldn’t be surprised when they have to replace theirs, although there are certainly many steps they can take to prolong the time before replacement.
