With us sweating out triple-digit temperatures for much of the summer, you are probably searching for ways to lower your air conditioning bills. There are a number of ways to increase the efficiency of your system and save money. These tips will help:
- Cover your windows – Sunlight streaming into a room can raise both the temperature and your bill drastically. Install curtains, blinds or solar shade screens to significantly reduce your air conditioning bill. Pay close attention to east- and west-facing windows.
- Keep the air flowing — Clear tall grass, leaves and other debris from around the outdoor unit of your cooling system. Such obstructions can reduce the air flow required by the condensing coil.
- Give your system a break — Although it may not seem like a lot, changing your thermostat from 68 to 75 degrees can greatly ease the pressure on your cooling system and on your wallet. Also, ceiling fans (rotating counterclockwise) can help the cool air circulate.
- Keep your cooling system clean — Increase your system’s efficiency by keeping the condensing coil and the evaporator coil clean. The condensing coil should be cleaned every year, generally by your HVAC contractor. The evaporator coil also should be kept free of mold and dirt. Cleaning should occur every few years and may be a tricky process best done by your HVAC contractor.
- Dehumidify — Part of the air conditioning system’s job is to dehumidify the air. Sealing air leaks, particularly around plumbing and wiring, is a good way to reduce moisture levels in your home and make your cooling system’s job easier.
